How to Bake the Perfect Homemade Cookie

Chocolate chip, peanut butter, snickerdoodles, lemon, oatmeal raisin … the possibilities are endless!  Homemade cookies are a special treat.  Here are a list of tips to help you bake your favorite cookies right in your own kitchen and enjoy marvelous results.

Instructions

1

Choose the cookie recipe you would like to bake.  Read the recipe through completely before starting to be sure you have the proper equipment.  If the recipe calls for an electric mixer, use one.  If you don’t have the equipment you need, borrow from a friend.  Don’t try to “make due”, it will show in the final product.  Taking short cuts and trying to save time aren’t recommended when baking cookies.

2

Read the recipe beforehand to review the necessary ingredients.  Be sure to have everything called for before you whip out your mixer and jump in.  Use the highest quality ingredients possible and always remember to check the expiration dates.  Expired ingredients such as baking powder and baking soda can alter the taste and quality of cookies.

3

Measure wet and dry ingredients properly.  Use dry measuring cups for dry ingredients and liquid measuring cups for liquids.  Spoon dry ingredients into the measuring cup, don’t use the measuring cup as a scoop.  This will pack the ingredient and you will use more than called for in the recipe.  To properly measure liquids, set the measuring cup on the counter and pour the liquid into it.  These tips help to ensure the proper measurements of your wet and dry ingredients.

4

Mix the batter properly.  If the recipe says stir by hand, do so.  If it says to mix for a certain number of minutes with an electric mixer, that is what needs to be done.  If you mix too much, air can enter the batter and cause your cookies to go flat.

5

Know the difference between cookie sheets and baking sheets.  Cookie sheets do not have sides, baking sheets do have sides.  Use what the recipe recommends.  Remember to use multiple cookie sheets so they are able to cool between uses.

6

Most importantly, follow the directions on the recipe.  Bake as directed and remember to preheat the oven if stated to do so in the recipe.  Have fun and happy cookie baking!

Tips & Warnings

*  Baking cookies is a great family activity.  Employ kids of all ages to help you bake up a batch of delicious treats.
